Despite all the high-profile issues with some media who may have gone too far in their pursuit of ‘scoops’, a free press is an essential part of any democratic society. Allowing any government to interfere in how the media is run and what subjects it can report on is surely a retrograde step. There have been too many instances of corruption and deliberate withholding of information by governments of all colours for the public to be able to rely on their openness and accountability without the media spotlight.
